Baptism at Valley View
Baptism is the act of being initiated into the Church of Jesus Christ. The central symbol in baptism is water -- sprinkled on the head (our most usual option), or poured over the head, or into which one is immersed. We baptize into the three persons of God – Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We believe that baptism is God’s action in us, and is a sign of all that God has done and will do in our lives as he draws us toward himself. It takes us a lifetime to grow into our baptism.
We do not re-baptize. In whatever way you were baptized (sprinkling, pouring or immersion), whenever you were baptized (infant, youth, adult), and in whatever Christian denomination you were baptized, we accept your baptism as a one-time action of God into which you will be constantly growing, with many experiences and learnings given to you by a loving God.
The faith-questions we ask at baptism of the person being baptized (if they are youth or adult) or of the parents (of an infant) are the same as those we ask of those joining the church. Click here to see those. But we do add one question of parents: "Will you nurture these children in Christ’s holy church, that by your teaching and example they may be guided to accept God’s grace for themselves, to profess their faith openly, and to lead a Christian life?" You may be assured that this congregation supports you in this task and provides many opportunities for Christian growth.
We expect that those who are baptized (and/or their parents) will be in worship each week, will seek to be part of smaller groups that will nurture them in the Christian faith and part of groups through which they can serve God and the needs of others.
