Joining Valley View UMC
Wherever you are on your faith journey, we invite you to become a member of Valley View United Methodist Church. It’s easier to grow closer to God if there are other people walking with you – people who will support, help and guide you on the journey – and people to whom you can offer care and love.
Before you join the church, we want you to attend a New Member Orientation Class (held about every three months; watch the bulletin and newsletter for dates) where you will have an opportunity to meet some of the members and staff of the church, and get an overview of United Methodist history, doctrine and polity. Then you get a "tour of the church," both a real walking-around-the-building tour, and a verbal tour of many of the opportunities you will have as a member of this church to grow in faith, hope and love, as well as ways you can serve God with your talents, abilities and passions.
What do we expect of our church members?
There are five historic questions that are asked of those who wish to join a United Methodist Church. All of us are on a continuing journey in both our understanding and our living of these questions. Wherever you are in your faith, you are welcome to join this church and continue the journey. These questions are not the goal. They are the beginning:
- Do you renounce the spiritual forces of wickedness, reject the evil powers of this world, and repent of your sin?
- Do you accept the freedom and power God gives you to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves?
- Do you confess Jesus Christ as your Savior, put your whole trust in his grace, and promise to serve him as your Lord, in union with the church which Christ has opened to people of all ages, nations, and races?
- According to the grace given to you, will you remain a faithful member of Christ’s holy church and serve as Christ’s representative in the world?
- As a member of this congregation, will you faithfully participate in its ministries by your prayers, your presence, your gifts, and your service?
Our other expectation is what we call worship plus two.
- Be in a worship service every Sunday, plus . . . .
- become an active part of a small group where you are being spiritually fed and cared for, plus . . . .
- become an active part of a ministry in which you use your abilities, spiritual gifts and passions to feed and care for others.
